Car Security Glossary

Security Systems, Convenience Systems and Remote Starts offer a wide range of systems to meet your needs. Systems range from simple systems that start your car from afar with the remote control to those that protect your valuables while you are away.

SECURITY SYSTEMS (aka Car Alarms)

These are systems that protect your car while you are away. Some of them can detect motion, vibration and even someone walking around the vehicle. All of them provide the audible and visual alerts that show someone is tampering with your vehicle. They will also all indicate what type of attempt was made when you disengage the alarm (unarm). Most systems also have the ability to unlock and lock your doors, roll windows up and down and turn lights on and off when you enter and exit the vehicle.

CONVENIENCE SYSTEMS (aka Remote Keyless Entry)

These are systems that allow you entry and exit of your vehicle. They add convenience, thus the name. These systems can also turn on and off the interior light when entering and exiting the vehicle. Most popular features are unlock and locking of the doors remotely. These systems are not considered alarms because they do not have intruder sensing ability built in.

REMOTE START ALARMS

These systems are very popular in cold or harsh climates. They allow you to start the vehicle via remote control. The most popular use of this is when the user is inside the house and wants the car warmed up or cooled down. These systems do not have the car alarm features built in, but can be added to a car alarm system.

ALARM TERMINOLOGY

2-Car Operation Lets one remote control operate a second alarm in a different vehicle.
2-Stage Shock Sensor Provides a warning chirp if your car is lightly bumped. A full siren blast occurs if the vehicle is hit harder.
Auto Zone Bypass If a sensor is violated and remains violated or becomes defective, the brain will ignore the sensor and rearm automatically.
Back-Up Battery Powers your alarm if your main battery dies or is disabled by a thief.
Dome Light Output Turns on the interior dome light when you disarm the alarm.
ETR Technology or Extended Remote Range Lets you activate your system from a greater distance - good for personal protection and locating your car.
Intrusion Memory Tells you which sensors were tripped when the alarm was triggered.
Parking Light Flash Flashes your parking lights when the alarm is triggered.
Personal Panic Alarm Lets you use your remote to set off the alarm in case of a personal emergency.
Remote Door Lock / Unlock Lets you use your alarms' remote to control your cars' power door locks. May require installation of external relays.
Remote Outputs You can use your remote to activate a power trunk release or roll up power windows (relays and roll up modules
Starter Disable Prevents starting of the engine after the alarm has been triggered. This prevents a thief who has broken into your vehicle from driving it away.
