This was quite a project for both the owner of the car as well as for Scott and Allen. with almost $20,000 invested into the system, this should make all the drives in this "rolling theatre" all the more enjoyable.
The owner bought this 1973 Mercedes-Benz about 5 years ago and has spent the last 3 years restoring it. The first thing replaced was the entire interior and roof, then the mechanicals were tuned, then a new dash and new woodwork and then .... our system was installed! It is now getting a new instrument cluster and steering wheel and then being repainted. This car is packed with a Dolby Digital 5.1 DVD sound system with GPS navigation and a security system (all by Alpine). The system was designed by Scott Dunnet and installed by Allen Hemmelgarn. |
The car arrived with no radio but the wiring was there for Allen to begin. This is a good picture showing the new dash, woodwork and seats.
The original speaker location in the dash was not designed for optimal sound reproduction so Scott designed a system that would more recreate a theatre environment. Allen started the installation process by running a main power wire from the dash to the trunk where the amplifiers would be located and removing the dash speakers. |
The rear compartment was removed to expose the area where the subwoofer enclosure, the rear speakers and the CD/DVD changer would all be housed. |
The first fiberglass layer of what will eventually be the passenger front speaker array. A fiberglass mold of the area is used so every bit of available space can be used and modifications to the vehicles' body are made.
This location is also optimal to align both front speakers to the driver's ears. |
The Alpine PXA-H510 Dolby digital surround processor and the amplifier from the Alpine SBS-0515 center channel were located under the passenger seat as these items do not require regular maintenance. |
| Both seats were removed and new wiring was run from the head unit area in the dash to the glove box. The glove box will house the displays from the Alpine SEC-8063 security system and the Alpine PXA-H510 Dolby digital sound processor. |
The rear enclosure is now framed and you can now see space for the two (2) Boston Acoustics COMP1000 10" subwoofers (to be recessed into the top), the Boston Acoustics RX67 6-1/2" coaxial speaker pair (front edges) and the Alpine DHA-S680 6-disc CD/DVD changer (center front).
Allen designed this enclosure to make the Alpine DHA-S680 6-disc CD/DVD changer accessible for our client and also to have it durable enough so that items could be put on top if needed. |
| A picture into the trunk shows the power wiring to the left of the gas tank and signal wiring to the right. It is imperative that the wiring be done in this manner to eliminate any noise induced into the audio system from the vehicle itself. |
The "brain" from the Alpine IVA-C801 AM/FM CD player with 6.5" LCD motorized monitor, is located under the drivers' seat. This item is the "heart" of the system as it has control over all the audio/video and navigation functions.
Since this item does not require regular maintenance, underseat mounting is perfect! |
This picture shows a board affixed to the back wall of the trunk where the rack, which will hold the Alpine MRV-F340 4-channel amplifier and the Alpine MRD-M500 mono channel amplifier, will be mounted.
All wiring is now tied down for safety and will be hidden once all the panels are installed. |

This is a close-up of the Alpine IVA-C801 AM/FM CD player with 6.5" LCD motorized monitor (in the closed position) mounted in the original location. Above it is the speaker from the Alpine SBS-0515 center channel speaker system. An analog clock was removed from the dash between the vents and now the Alpine SBS-0515 center channel speaker resides there under a custom fabricated grill. |
Now the two (2) Boston Acoustics COMP1000 10" subwoofers, the Boston Acoustics RX67 6-1/2" coaxial speakers and the Alpine DHA-S680 6-disc CD/DVD changer are mounted in the enclosure.
As per the client's wishes, the enclosure is custom painted to highlight each item and is trimmed with original carpet. |
The trunk area is nearing completion with the amplifier rack completed with painted highlights and a custom trim panel around the rack outfitted in original carpet. The Alpine MRD-M500 mono amplifier on the left is completely wired while the Alpine MRV-F340 4-channel amplifier on the right has some wiring to go.
You may notice that a hinged shroud covers the wiring when in the down position giving the illusion that there is no wiring attached to the amplifier.
Also, being that the amplifiers are identical in size, when the shrouds are both down, it may look as if there is only 1 GIANT amplifier! |
| The Boston Acoustics RC520 5-1/4" 2-way component set is now mounted in the speaker pod. By finishing the pod in the original speaker carpet (which Allen says was EXTREMELY challenging), it gives the impression that the speaker is built into the car! |
The rear enclosure finished in original carpet with all panels in place. The only step to go is to cover all the exposed items with the removable protective grills. |
The completed trunk area. Again, only a removable protective panel to cover the amplifiers is missing.
The side walls of the trunk are now also covered with custom panels hiding the Alpine NVE-N871A DVD GPS navigation system and the motor from the Hirschmann E2040 power antenna. |
The car finally sees the light of day! After about a month of work, the vehicle is released to its' owner.
In this picture you can now see the finished product with all protective grills in place. |
| The drivers' side speaker array covered with a removable protective grill. This speaker location does not interfere with any operation of the car including the emergency foot brake ... quite a challenge but Allen was up to it! |
In the glove box are the status displays for the Alpine SEC-8063 security system and the Alpine PXA-H510 Dolby digital surround processor as well as storage for all the wireless remotes. |
